These are some of the rebuilt buildings, around the square. The date, on the upper right building face, is 1889--so the fire was a few years earlier but neither Stewart nor I can remember the exact date. Only a few years, however, for the merchants were very unwilling to lose revenue $ and insisted the immediate rebuilding begin. There was another problem, the land was too low and the city officials insisted on raising the streets 8-16 feet!! They were going to move the hill [above and inland] but the merchants wouldn't wait for the 8-10 years needed to do this--hardly surprising, is it?? So what happened, you say??? Posted by Picasa
